Reader review: Right Ho, Jeeves

Chrissy Oglivie from Grange-over-Sands reading group shares her thoughts on Right Ho, Jeeves

We began with Right Ho, Jeeves which sounded unpromising to me. I assumed it would be dated and uninteresting. I am not a Downton Abbey fan and find toffs and servant drama tedious. However, I found the book brilliantly written, well plotted and hugely funny. Much of the humour comes from what is not said by Jeeves or the tone one imputes to his laconic “Yes sir”.

One cannot hate or despise the inept and self important Bertie as his intentions are good. Instead I feel an affection as one would for a child who is doing his best but messes up. I found the part where Jeeves educates him on a Latin phrase particularly delicious. Subtly the book questions the whole class system. Money, status and power seem to belong to the incompetent!
