Radio 2 Book Club choice: The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair

The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair by Joël Dicker and translated by Sam Taylor will be featured on the Radio 2 Book Club on Monday 2 June.

The book was selected with the help of a panel made up of Reading Agency and library staff from across the UK.

The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair

August 30, 1975. The day Somerset, New Hampshire, lost its innocence. That summer, struggling author Harry Quebert fell in love with fifteen-year-old Nola Kellergan. Thirty-three years later, her body is dug up from his yard, along with a manuscript copy of the novel that made him a household name. Quebert is the only suspect.

Marcus Goldman – Quebert’s most gifted protégé – throws off his writer’s block to clear his mentor’s name. Solving the case and penning a new bestseller soon merge into one. As his book begins to take on a life of its own, the nation is gripped by the mystery of ‘The Girl Who Touched the Heart of America’.

But with Nola, in death as in life, nothing is ever as it seems.

Selection panel review

Our selection panel gave the book a glowing review: "_Lolita_ meets Twin Peaks. This is a wonderful book. Slow, burning story, part murder mystery in the tradition of the amateur sleuth, it’s also about the art of writing and the business of publishing. A crime has been committed and everyone in the town seems to have a motive. It’s a story within a story within a story until we eventually reach the truth.

“Harry has a secret – and it’s not at all what I expected. I loved it.”

About the author

Joël Dicker was born in Geneva in 1985, where he studied Law. The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair was nominated for the Prix Goncourt and won the Grand Prix du Roman de l’Académie Française and the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens.
