We’ve asked eight groups to read a selection of P. G. Wodehouse this autumn to celebrate the publication of Jeeves and the Wedding Bells. The groups will share their thoughts on the books on Reading Groups for Everyone periodically so be sure to check back for more.
The Groups
Grange library reading group
We are 12 female book lovers who have been meeting once a month for the last 12 years. We meet in our wonderful local library in Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria. We all enjoy the challenge of a project as we find it lends an extra dimension to our discussions.
Crewe library Monday reading group
One of our members is an avid Wodehouse fan whilst others may have read one or two or none. A couple of especially popular past reads have been Philip Pullman Northern Lights and Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. We are pretty united in our dislike of Hilary Mantel. We also disliked The Wind-up Bird Chronicle and Death and the Penguin.
Hayes End library group
We have 8 members with the majority of them at early retirement age. Surprisingly only a few of us have read Wodehouse before although everyone had heard of him.
Orchard readers
Everybody sings in the same choir and we found that as well as a shared passion for music we also share an enthusiasm for P.G. Wodehouse. Most of us have read some Wodehouse before and love most of his work, although our favourite books are the Blandings stories.
Clapton library
Several members said that they’d always wanted to read him, but never actually got round to it, so we’re all raring to go and indulge ourselves in some upper class Britishness. We’re hoping for some bitingly cynical commentary about social issues, and for some clever silliness, and whatever other surprises Mr Wodehouse has up his sleeve, Jeeves!
Busy Bees
We take it in turns to choose a book for the group to read. Each of us picked a genre at the start of the year and you have to select a book within your chosen genre. We have covered fantasy, crime, erotica, historical biography and travel so far.
