Get involved with libraries' Gillian Slovo promotion

We’re launching a reading campaign in UK libraries with Virago Press (an imprint of Little, Brown Book Group) to introduce library readers to critically acclaimed and bestselling literary fiction author Gillian Slovo.

47 libraries in Lambeth, Camden and East Sussex have each received free copies of Gillian Slovo’s new novel as well as bespoke bookmarks and shelf-talkers all encouraging historical fiction fans and reading groups to borrow Slovo’s latest novel, An Honourable Man and write a review of it using specially created postcards.

A novel of war, honour and humanity, librarians in collaborating libraries will also be encouraging readers who are returning novels on similar subjects or by similar authors to try An Honourable Man.

As part of this promotion Gillian Slovo will also be taking part in library events – more information on these events will be available soon on the Virago website – so make sure to check back if you or your reading group are interested in going.

About An Honourable Man

‘Stunning’ – Guardian

‘Gripping’ – Scotsman

‘Beautifully drawn’ – Metro

In Khartoum the trumpeters, layers of red sand glittering on their faces, are posted at each corner of the palace roof. Trapped between the desert and the Jihad, oblivious to the heat and the impending dust storm, General Gordon is waiting, hopelessly, for Wolseley’s camel corps to cross the shimmering land and rescue him. He begins to hallucinate betrayals and beheadings; unwittingly he is about to touch and change lives far beyond his own including those of a London doctor, John Clark and his wife Mary, and especially the young boy from the English dockyard slums who now stands beside him, his reluctant last ally.

About Gillian Slovo

Born in South Africa, Gillian Slovo has written ten novels. ICE ROAD was shortlisted for the Orange Prize and RED DUST was filmed with Hilary Swank and Chiwetel Ejiofor. She is the President of English PEN.
