Chatterbooks clubs are a great way to inspire pupils’ reading for pleasure. To encourage more schools to join the network, we’ve been running a competition with the prize of a visit by our Ambassador Jacqueline Wilson.
We asked schools to tell us why they want to run a Chatterbooks club – and why they would like to welcome Jacqueline to their school. We also asked about their links with public and school library services, and how reading for pleasure features in their school development plan.
We had some excellent entries from schools running or planning to set up Chatterbooks groups and we’re pleased to announce that the winner is Beavers Community Primary School in Hounslow who are now getting their Chatterbooks club up and running, and looking forward to their visit from Jacqueline Wilson.
We were very impressed by the enthusiasm of their entry and their commitment to raising the profile of reading in their school, wanting parents along with children to be motivated by this much-loved author.
Running the new club will be Sam Novak, assistant headteacher, and Sarah Mander, strategic leader for community cohesion.
Beavers school headteacher Ms D Scott says: “We really value reading in our school and are excited at the prospect of starting our own Chatterbooks reading club. We place a lot of emphasis on reading for enjoyment and to have Dame Jacqueline Wilson visit our school is truly a wonderful opportunity for our whole school community.”
Get involved
We have lots of support available for teachers and librarians who are thinking of setting up a Chatterbooks reading club including Chatterpacks and Chatterbook reads packs which suggest books and activities you might like to try with your group.
We’re also holding a training day in London on 26 February for those setting up new groups.
