Our Austen groups are working their way through Joanna Trollope’s Sense and Sensibility. We asked for their views on their favourite Austen adaptations, here’s what they said.
Sue Barsby: My favourite stock adaptation of Austen is Emma Thompson’s version of Sense and Sensibility – it works so well because she realises that Austen’s best talent was in dialogue and so much of the film’s dialogue has been lifted straight off the page.
Clueless is so clever to transport the whole thing to southern California and I think the main character is more sympathetic and likeable in Clueless than in Emma. I find Bridget Jones less likeable that Elizabeth Bennett (she’s not as clever) but it is a good adaptation.
Catherine Smith: My absolute favourite Austen adaptation is Lost In Austen by Guy Andrews. It’s a time travel swap between a modern day Jane Austen fan, Amanda Price, & Elizabeth Bennet. The plot is great & it has a great ending.
