Enjoyed this story about a young couple trying to make their way in pre Nazi Germany. Written in 1932 it reveals much of the grim social history of the time as the couple stumble from one crisis to another. Fallada is excellent on the minute detail of everyday life and brings scenes and characters into sharp focus with seeming ease.
