It’s a perfect world, where everything looks right. But ugly truths lie beneath. In a future society, life appears civilised and ordered. But when 12-year-old Jonas is given the job of ""Receiver of Memories"" he realises the horrible truth that lies behind the perfect facade.

My favourite character was definitely Jonas because he was brave enough to share the memories with everyone despite the consequences he would face. I would recommend this book to anyone because helps you appreciate coulors, love, music, uniqueness, nature and other things we take for granted in life.

Just finished this and can’t quite process it all right away.
There’s so much to think about, on lots of levels.
Will ponder it over the days ahead and see where I get to…

A fascinating portrayal of a dystopian world.. The main character, Jonas, lives in a community that has survived with strict rules of obedience. There is no war, no hunger and no pain. When he is given his assignment within the community, he starts to discover secrets that have remained hidden.

A thought-provoking yet disconcerting read for young adults and adults rather than younger children.

read this as it is part of a reading scheme my school is undertaking I enjoyed it not sure if the students would be 100% engaged with it as it can get bleak

It was an interesting premise but it felt a little heavy handed and I was left with questions that left me a little unsatisfied.

I loved this book. I loved the narrative and the characterisation of Jonas and his family. Although over 20 years old now, it still feels relevant and modern. The issues the book deals with are as potent today as they were when the book was written. The idea of the capacity to see beyond your own current experience and knowledge really stayed with me as I read this novel. The dystopian world depicted is uncanny and the reader understands Jonas' journey. The novel has pace and although their are sequels, I think it holds up very well as a standalone read. I would recommend this for KS3.

I did not like this book a lot because it was kinda boring. But my favorite character is the first Give because he is wise.

I read the giver for my nineteenth-grade English class and I LOVED IT! TOP TEN OF BOOKS! It seems so real as if you were Jonas and you can see everything he is going through. I really liked every part about this and I'm not a huge reader. I read and listened to the audiobook when I didn't have time to sit down and read it but I recommended it. I understood about the pills, and release and lots of others (because I don't want to give it away.) so I think you could read this in 6th grade and beyond. I recommend reading the book first then watching the movie if you want to watch the movie just because you will know the characters more and the movie is a little more confusing and rushed but yeah. You should read it

This book was thought provoking, a tear jerker and one that I couldn’t put down.
The concept of an ‘Assignment’ in life based on your personal attributes coupled with the idea that largely, your role and your input in to society has already been decided, poses many ethical questions. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

This Book is set in the future. There is no hunger, no pain, but no colour, warmth or music as everything has been changed to sameness. I would recommend this book to 10-13 year olds

This book is about the future. There is no colour, no music because all of that went to sameness. I recommend this book to 9-14 year olds.
