The classic collection of poetry from the author of I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS.

‘A brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman’ BARACK OBAMA

Maya Angelou’s poetry – lyrical and dramatic, exuberant and playful – speaks of love, longing, partings; of Saturday night partying, and the smells and sounds of Southern cities; of freedom and shattered dreams.

‘She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence and a fierce grace . . . She will always be the rainbow in my clouds’ OPRAH WINFREY

‘She was important in so many ways. She launched African American women writing in the United States. She was generous to a fault. She had nineteen talents – used ten. And was a real original. There is no duplicate’ TONI MORRISON

A collection of poems by Maya Angelou, covering topics from powerful women (Phenomenal Woman) to sleep deprivation (Insomniac) and love (Refusal).

Maya Angelou finds ways to paint pictures, build emotion and help readers empathise with specific situations.

In some poems, like 'Where We Belong, A Duet', she speaks about the journey of finding someone. Going from place to place, meeting strangers, and the rejection after thinking you've actually found the one "I wooed them sweetly, was theirs completely, But they always let me go".

In other poems, like 'Contemporary Announcement', she keeps it short and punchy. 2 stanzas, 10 lines, 2 perspectives of the day that no one can avoid, the day when rent is due.

Before reading this book, I only knew of her most famous poems, 'Still I Rise' and 'Caged Bird'. They both had a power that I thought was unique to their words, but I now understand that it's the power of Maya Angelou. Her words are magical, and so is she. I look forward to reading more of her works. I only hope that they have me as transfixed as this collection.
