Mary, Mary quite contrary How does your garden grow? ""I live with my brat in a high-rise flat so how in the world would I know""’. Rhyme Stew bubbles over with Roald Dahl’s inimitable humour and invention. ‘Hey diddle diddle We’re all on the fiddle And never get up until noon. We only take cash Which we carefully stash.

I happened across the collection of Roald Dahl poems in a local charity shop and thought I'd give it a bash. What I failed to notice was the warning.that this book was aimed more at older children and adults. Indeed, this was made perfectly clear upon closer inspection. Poems which have double meanings are not the type you'd read to your children at bedtime I must say. Being pinned down by the gym mistress and taught to wrestle.with her on the mat is not something I would be talking about out loud with my children. I am pleased that I read it, to enable myself to stir well clear of it come Roald Dahl celebrations in Sept!
