I thought this was a convincing spy thriller. It's set in Moscow towards the end of the Cold War in 1985 and the story is engrossing and full of tension. A senior KGB officer, codenamed GAMBIT, has approached the CIA’s Moscow Station chief with top secret military weapons intelligence asking to be exfiltrated. But he makes it a condition that his handler should be Alex Garin, a former KGB officer who defected to America years earlier. Garin isn’t trusted by the CIA but they have no other option than to comply. Garin wins the trust of GAMBIT but remains an enigma throughout the story, while the other characters are all too believable even if they aren’t particularly easy to relate to. I'll probably look for more books by this author now.
