This book had me gripped. Full of tragedy but so happy the ending was a happy one. Many twists in the tale and relatable main female character.

I thought this book was really good because it had loads of lighthouse mysteries.
I liked the girl because they describe her as ''in the background' 'but she gradually gets to be in the spotlight

A fictional story set against the backdrop of WW2. A great story that not only shows what elements of life were like during this difficult period, but also offers a fantastic twist.

Our Castle by the Sea is set in World War II and is also an intriguing mystery.

My favourite character is Pet (Petra) because she is such an easy character to connect to and understand. She also appreciates nature just like I do and is an amazing artist. Also, her mum's German, so she can speak it, and as I can speak it too it makes the ability to know her much easier.

I would definitely recommend this book to 8-14 year olds who love historical fiction, mystery, and a bit of sadness and fear rolled into one. It also includes easy to relate to family conversations.

Five stars!

I love this book and have already recommended it to several friends . It deals very directly but sensitively with the ways in which a family is affected by WW2; bombing, internment, evacuation, Dunkirk, loss, espionage are all in there, alongside a magical legend that highlights the romance and danger of the sea. It’s full of tension and adventure. Highly recommended!

War and loss, magic and myths, belonging and betrayal. The story of Pet and her family as they navigate their way through World War 2 is intriguing and poignant. A great read!

I liked how the author, Lucy, related this story to war as well as horror because the war made it more dramatic.
My favourite part was when Petra found that Mrs Baron and Michael Baron were helping the enemy team in war.
Petra was really brave.

This was an intriguing read, set in the early years of the Second World War and beginnings of air raids. It captures excellently the sheer terror of expecting, and experiencing attacks from the air - Lucy Strange's writing about wearing a gas mask was especially vivid for me. It also captures the setting of the Kent coastline beautifully.

The characters are very well drawn and complex, showing a realistic family dynamic. Strange shows the different sides to 'patriotism' in England during the war and the way this impacted on "enemy aliens". This is a story which is not often told, particularly in children's literature.

This will be a very welcome addition to my book corner (and or excellent read aloud) for Year 6. I'm sure it will provoke lots of interesting debate.

I really enjoyed this book and felt the emotion of the main characters and the injustice of the circumstances they find themselves in. A book for older children.

One of the best books I've read this year. Recommended to me by one of my student and my first book by Lucy Strange, I definitely want to read more. A gripping story set in World War II.

This book is fabulous. I love the way that there are unlikely traitors and unknown heroes. I enjoy reading about World War II in fiction so this is the type of book for me. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys action and mystery all rolled into one.

I liked it because it was about World War II and it was exciting and full of suspense. There were lots of twists and turns in the characters and it took you on a journey through time. I would recommend it to my friends.

One of the better children’s books set in WWII that I’ve read recently. A lot of historical information regarding the time period is provided without it feeling like a lecture. The language and writing is to a high standard and I enjoyed the small dose of magic/mysticism which was mixed in without becoming too unrealistic. Just enough for atmosphere and to keep things interesting.

The characters were sympathetic and well-developed. I could see their actions being the subject of many good discussions, especially Pa’s. The main character, Pet, was a quite character coming to realise her inner strength and someone to whom many could relate.

I would definitely recommend this book to other people, though with the awareness that there is a character death which might affect some people, especially in the current climate.

I loved this book because I never knew what would happen next! It was fiction book and my favourite characters are Petra Zimmerman Smith (Pet) and her big sister Magda (Mags). Our Castle by the Sea is about two sisters during a war. Mags and Pet’s mum, who they call Mutti, is taken away and their Pa died trying to save some soldiers. Pet and Mags make some new enemies and they find their unknown grandfather. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes suprising and action books!
