Set in Finland in 1901 this is, as you'd expect from Helen Dunmore, a sharply observed novel about the politics of the time as well as a very personal story. It is a beautifully written and well told story about 2 close friends that also told me much I hadn't previously known about the history of Finland and her relationship with Russia. Great storytelling, highly recommended.
