Rhythm and Poetry (otherwise known as RAP) is by Hip Hop artist and poet Karl Nova. The beauty of rap lyricism and Hip Hop influenced poetry is displayed with wit, humour and positivity. His approach is to meet young people where they are and engage them with the style and attitude they are familiar with. This collection reflects on his journey of growth from childhood to adulthood through the lens of Hip Hop culture.

I know that poetry is an area I can improve in. I was perusing the library for another book to read after Running on Empty and this one caught my eye. I thought the front cover was interesting and the artwork seemed passionate. I also like rap music, so the title got my attention.

I think poetry can sometimes be viewed as boring and what we often forget is that songs, whether it’s rap, rock or a love ballad, are just collections of poetry but performed to music. I remember an English teacher I had in secondary school for a little bit who used a Red Hot Chilli Peppers song to teach us poetry and I always look for ways to do that.

Karl Nova will take you on a wonderful journey through his childhood and teens. He touches on a lot of real issues that you might face growing up, and poems such as ‘Waiting for That Bell to Ring’, ‘Homework’ and ‘Younger Me’ felt particularly powerful as I read them. There’s plenty of fun poems like ‘Winter Fall’ and ‘Animal Talk’.

Sometimes a collection of poetry can be heavy going, so I recommend: ‘Peer Pressure’, ‘Words’, ‘You’ve Gotta Love It’, ‘Don’t Feed the Trolls’ and ‘Wings’ if you read only a few.

Great resource to use in the classroom from Karl Nova. Black poet who would appeal to those children who don’t like school and think they don’t like poetry. Links poetry to rapping. Some really lovely poems about learning but my favourite was about peer pressure. Will definitely use with my year 6 class.
