For Selvon, Ardan and Yusuf, growing up under the towers of Stones Estate, summer means what it does anywhere: football, music, freedom. But now, after the killing of a British soldier, riots are spreading across the city, and nowhere is safe. While the fury swirls around them, Selvon and Ardan remain focused on their own obsessions, girls and grime.

A tense, slow burning novel set in London and full of fear and uncertainty. Narrated in turn by three young men and two older people we learn of their lives and hopes in all their hum-drum edginess and the scene is set of a city in turmoil just waiting to explode. We're led slowly but with a sense of foreboding and inevitability to the novel's incendiary climax. A great book that felt brave, somehow, and worth the time spent getting to know the characters.
