Abir Mukherjee is an author whose name appears regularly on award lists, and this won the CWA Historical Dagger Award in 2017. It’s Book 1 in the Sam Wyndham series which now numbers five titles. Set in India in 1919, Wyndham arrives to take up an important post in the Calcutta police force. His first case is the murder of a senior official, which sets off a chain of events. What sets this apart from so many historical mysteries is that Mukherjee paints a fascinating picture of India which I found almost as interesting as the crime investigation. I'm definitely going to look for the rest of the books in this series.
