Win, read and review copies of China Room by Sunjeev Sahota

Vintage is delighted to offer five reading groups the opportunity to win copies of China Room by Sunjeev Sahota published in May 2021.

About the book

The Booker Prize-shortlisted author of The Year of the Runaways, returns with his long-awaited new novel China Room. Told with courage and humanity, China Room is a story of love, inheritance and the pursuit of freedom, twining together the experiences of two people separated by half a century, but united by blood.

Mehar, a young bride in rural 1929 Punjab, is trying to discover the identity of her new husband. She and her sisters-in-law, married to three brothers in a single ceremony, spend their days hard at work in the family’s ‘china room’, sequestered from contact with the men. Spiralling around Mehar’s story is that of a young man who in 1999 travels from England to the now-deserted farm, its ‘china room’ locked and barred.

Described by Kamila Shamsie as ‘a gorgeous, gripping read’ and by Bryan Washington as ‘the stuff of miracles’, this is an astonishing feat of storytelling from one of our most exceptional novelists.
