Tony Spawforth, writer and historian

Tony Spawforth is a classical historian and writer. Emeritus Professor of Ancient History at Newcastle University, he was formerly Assistant Director of the British School of Archaeology at Athens and Member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.

He is the author of Oxford Archaeological Guides: Greece, The Complete Greek Temples and Greece and the Augustan Cultural Revolution, and co-editor of The Oxford Classical Dictionary and The Oxford Companion to Classical Civilization, among others. His broadcast work includes presenting eight archaeological documentaries on BBC2 and numerous appearances as an expert on TV and radio.
