Sub Plots and Side Books
adults
Sub Plots and Side Books was formed following the difficult Christmas of 2020. Feeling isolated from the people in her life, Emma, a NHS healthcare manager, hoped a book club would reconnect people; with stories providing a focus and a non-covid backdrop to gather remotely. Emma invited eight women she knew well to join her, and from the earliest moments the conversation flowed and lasting bonds were made.
Meeting virtually each month, the club also holds an annual in-person meet at literary locations where they share food, wine and time together. Members span much of England, from Bath and Bristol to Brighton and Essex, London, the Midlands, and Liverpool, and their reading tastes are similarly broad. Over the past few years, they have explored a variety of books, both classic and contemporary, and conversations are supported by an active Whatsapp group that has become a vital lifeline for topical debate, female solidarity and humour - both literary and non-literary. The group name reflects the space that has been made for the rich array of sub-plots and side books that they encounter in their lives.
