Hamburg during the World War 2 must have been a terrifying place in which to live. Allied bombing practically destroyed the city and the populace lived in fear of being denounced and sent to labour camps - for many this was a death sentence.

Greta was a young woman when the war began. With a mind of her own and not a supporter of the Nazis, she found life hard. She lived with her mother in a house that escaped all the bombing throughout the war but it was shared with lodgers who did not necessarily share Greta’s political views.

This book follows the family as they strive to survive. Greta is required to work as a typist in the Wehrmacht where her aptitude leads her to be trained in the use of the Enigma encryption machine.

A true story. Recommended.
