Midwinter. A child is found wandering in an ancient woodland, her hands covered in blood. But it is not her own. Unwilling – or unable – to speak, the only person she seems to trust is the young officer who rescued her, Detective Sergeant Lucy Black. Soon afterwards, DS Black is baffled to find herself suddenly moved from a high-profile case involving a kidnapping of another girl, a prominent businessman’s teenage daughter. At home, Black is struggling with caring for her increasingly unstable father, and trying to avoid conflict with her frosty mother – who also happens to be the Assistant Chief Constable. As she tries to identify the unclaimed child, Black begins to realise that her case and the kidnapping may be linked by events from the grimmest days of the country’s recent history – events that also defined her own trouble childhood. Little Girl Lost is a devastating crime thriller about corruption, greed and vengeance, and a father’s love for his daughter.

this first 'lucy black' novel from brian mcgilloway gives a great sense of place of northern ireland without it being only relevant to a native. i loved the 'devlin' books, but this new character moves at a faster pace. it is very well written for a lover of the language, and the twists and turns over such a short period of time keeps the reader on tender hooks to the last page. mcgilloway writes very well as a man writing with a woman as lead character. he doesn't make situations where as a woman you feel a jarring or cringing. i can only see this new character developing into a more all rounded character who will keep this reader waiting impatiently for the next installment.

I knew from the first few lines that I was going to enjoy this book. The story is gripping and moves at a good pace. The characters are believable and all the strands hang together well. I will be seeking out more by this author.

This book provides the start for a new series of books from Brian McGilloway. It introduces DS Lucy Black, a PSNI Detective based in Londonderry/Derry. The story captured me from the beginning of the book and kept me engaged. I certainly didn't put the book until I had finished it in the wee small hours. Initially I thought Lucy was a wee bit naive for her rank and job she has, but it obviously gives her room to develop in the future. I certainly look forward to the next in the series and have no hesitation in recommending the book to potential readers.

Fantastic read. Lucy Black is struggling with a career and family issues and to make matters worse wondering what her father's involvement might be in a case she is currently investigating.
