What a weird book! The protagonist, Peter Grant, works in the London police force for a DI who’s a wizard and is in charge of the magic department! There he meets other wizards, trolls and vampires as he helps to investigate why people are acting strangely, their faces are collapsing and they are dying. He is also asked to help with an ongoing dispute with mother and father Thames. Even having read this book I think the premise behind it too complicated to explain. Nonetheless the characters were well-rounded and it was well written but it was too weird for my tastes.
Norfolk Gal, Oundle Crime
A very silly book. Could not work out if it was White or Dark magic. Although I am from England I actually found the constant references to streets, old alleyways, old pubs etc. tedious. And did not fit the story. I actually got half way. Then gave up. I would not recommend this book to others.
Very enjoyable and easy to read. I'm going to read my way through the series.
We read this as part of London Cityread 2015. I loved it and would read this again and again. This is such a brilliant merging of genre.
I would recommend to crime and fantasy readers. Ben's intimate knowledge of London puts the reader right into the action, I felt as I was there with Peter Grant and have devoured all of the subsequent books with relish!
However, most of the reading group hated it. (:0( Their loss!
Provided mixed reviews among the group - some loved it to the extent of reading the rest of the series before the meeting, other simply couldn't get their heads around the magical elements or "scatterbrained" nature of the plot progressions.
the person i liked best in this book was pc peter grant and the fact that one of witness was a ghost is testimony of the the characters , although no one else can see this ghost it twist and turns and ends really bizarrely.i wouldnt recommend this book.
I loved this book. Absolutely loved it.
I'm a big fan of fantasy but don't go in for all that swords and sorcery stuff so this book was a real treat.
I guess it would be described as urban fantasy.
I would place it somewhere between Harry Potter and Neil Gaiman but nothing like either.
I particularly loved the modernity of it and how it really brings London to life.
All I can say is READ IT READ IT READ IT :)
New to this author, kept skipping past his books and I have no idea why. I read this book in less than 24 hours! Subtle comedy weaved into a mixture of fantasy and crime writing with a dash of historical content. Thoroughly enjoyable and interesting.
