The open door felt like an invitation, or a trap. Bastien wasn’t sure which, but with no other choice, he stepped inside…and hoped he’d make it out again alive.

Bastien Bonlivre is a boy with a big imagination, determined to finish the story his parents started, left to him in a red notebook.

On the other side of Paris, bestselling author Olivier Odieux is struggling to complete his latest novel. Along with his villainous brothers, he is masterminding his greatest plot yet…one that will spread fear throughout the city and beyond.

What connects these two stories is a dangerous secret, a hidden mystery and an unexpected race across Paris for the truth. Can Bastien and his friends Alice, Theo and Sami be brave enough to stop Olivier stealing the ending they deserve?

A classic adventure story about friendship, hope, bravery and the power of imagination.

I liked the fact that throughout the story Bastien finds out more information to find the missing writers and to defeat the director of the orphanage, Monsieur Xavier and his brother Olivier Odieux, an author, and bring back the writers.

I enjoyed this book because it me feel that I understood the mystery but surprised me in other ways. When I finished this book, I still wanted to know what the secret was but I guess it will be told in the next book.

This was an incredible story with an interesting plot. This is the first time I have read a book that swaps French and English but there is a helpful dictionary in case you do not understand the words. Full of adventure and mystery set in 1922 after the first World War. I look forward to reading the second adventure of Bastien Bonlivre!

This was an excellent book because it taught me that friendship is a love that can keep you strong and brave. It surprised me because Bastien thought he’d have the same fate as his parents, but with the help of his friends, he survives and has an adventure in the catacombs under the city of Paris.

I like Alice the most because she has a great interest in reading and she tries to help Bastien. My favourite part would be the mystery of the missing writers and where they were, but I really liked the suspense built when Bastien and his friend find the message underneath the type writer " help "
