What you don’t remember can’t hurt you…

Cyan has lived at the Elsewhere Sanctuary for as long as he can remember, freed by Dr Haven from dark memories of his past life. But when Cyan finds a mysterious warning carved into the bones of a whale skeleton, he starts to wonder what he had to forget to be so happy.
New resident, Jonquil, begins to resist the sanctuary’s treatment, preferring to hold on to her memories – even the bad ones. So when Dr Haven resorts to harsher measures, Cyan embarks on a secret mission to discover the truth about the sanctuary…and himself.

I liked the idea of a moving cube building thing. It was thrilling and had a brilliant twist. I also liked how the 'Part 1, part 2, part 3' style you get in most books of decent length was replaced by treatment phases and doses and stuff.

I really enjoyed this book about children at an isolated academy who have had their memories suppressed/ temporarily deleted due to childhood trauma. The story shows why it's good and healthy to feel ,bad as well as good, and there is good advice from rhe author at the end of the book on that subject. With the pressures on teens and YA (and younger children) to cope with traumas and bury negative events and emotions, this book encourages talking, feeling and working thi gs out. Great for positive mental health. Highly recommended.

Cyan is a great character along with Ruby who I think He likes and it’s interesting to see that he rebels against Dr haven after being in slave in the builders of the members of the grounds as a prisoner and I like the express expression that he uses lab rats because it’s it is just so true it’s such a great book and I recommend it to about the age group of 10 to 12 it’s fantastic it was fiction and it was amazing

What a unique story which very cleverly gets children to explore issues around mental health and well being. I read this to my daughter and 1 chapter a night was not enough! The story is set at The Sanctuary, and at first you are not entirely sure what the facility is and what it is trying to do. All the children have names that are a colour and we are told they are trying to forget something traumatic from their past. As the story progresses, more is revealed and we were desperate to find out what would happen to Cyan. The book has a definite sci-fi vibe to it and it is quite unlike the books we usually read but we were gripped and it was an excellent read. Really good for opening up discussions about feelings and not keeping things hidden away.

Hard hitting tense book about mental health issues which contains suggestions of lobotomies. Suitable for ages 11+

It was thrilling and had a brilliant twist. I liked the idea of a moving cube building. It sounds like a Rubik's cube.

Engaging dystopian account of children who are encouraged to forget rather than talk about their feelings. Challenging and thought provoking.

A real thriller of a read, full of mystery, suspense, on-the-edge-of-your-seat pace, that offers some thought provoking moments too… just how far would we/could we/should we go to escape bad memories?

A tale of friendship, freedom and tackling demons. It will leave you breathless and thoughtful.

6 stars for this brilliant psychological thriller. I loved it. Reminiscent of 50s B movies, Shutter Island, Crater Lake it's gripping from page 1. If you've not read it yet, get a copy now!

Brilliant storytelling here, I could picture the world created by Darren Simpson so clearly and the characters jumped off the page. Loved the villain in the story-genuinely creepy.
