It was always at sundown they were seen. In that twilight hour, when the walls between the worlds grew thin, strange things might slip through the cracks. Sometimes then, so the stories went, enchanted islands would appear in the empty ocean to the west of Wildsea.

When Utterly Dark was a baby, she was washed up on the shores of the Autumn Isles and taken in by the Watcher of Wildsea. But everything changes when her guardian suddenly drowns. Now who will keep the Watch, and make sure Wildsea stays safe from the strange forces teeming in the deep ocean around them?

A magical new story from the bestselling and prize-winning author of Mortal Engines.

This is a challenging book for strong readers at the upper end of Primary school. As with many of Philip Reeve's stories, it starts in the middle of the story and you have to let it unfold around you. The main character is called Utterly, which can be confusing for younger readers but it is genius. She makes discoveries with the reader, carrying you on a journey of discovery into strange, new worlds.

This book is really good because it has magic in it but it's so well described that it seems real. My favourite characters are Utterly because she is funny and seems like a real child and Aish the troll. My favourite parts are when Utterly goes to visit Aish. I'd reccomend this book to readers about 10-12 years old.

A very good book that has some very sad and touching parts, but also has very happy and scary parts! I love the sea just as much as Utterly, and love to explore the beach! With many plot twists, this story is very exciting!

This is a clearly fictional book as all of us know that this generation does not consist of troops or giants my favourite character is utterly as she had shown such bravery and courage in the hardest of times it was not based on facts it was more based on her thought and opinions but what interests me the most in the book was the way the paragraphs where written with clear explanation this would not be my most favourite book but I would recommend it to anyone who lover thriller and tension books.

I liked the person Utterly the best because she is an adventurous and kind person. This book is fictional. If you like a bit of fun but a little bit scary this is a book for you. I rated it a four because I don't like scary books.

Meet Utterly Dark. Daughter of The Gorm, the sea spirit of the western deeps, washed up on Wildsea's shores 11 years ago. When her guardian drowns, she must take over the watch that the Dark family have completed every evening for centuries. One day, The Gorm rampages through Wildsea and Utterly realises she has come for her. She gives herself up, and weed men come and take her away to the Hidden Lands, the Gorm's home. Can Egg, Utterly's friend, and Uncle Will save her before the spell is set and she forgets them forever?

I read this book after my daughter recommended it to me. It’s been on my radar for some time but I hesitated to read it, thinking that it would a lighter weight variation on Orphans of the Tide or Malamander. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by the storyline and the writing. It’s quite a dark and at some times unrelenting read. That said, things started to go wrong for me after Utterly was taken by the Gorm. I was very disappointed with the turn around in the story and felt that things were being over explained again and again. What a shame 😕

Exciting story about a girl who has to save her people and find the key to her mysterious past. Suitable for MG readers. Magical realism.

Loved the story, the evocation of the Sea as Utterly's mother. Philip Reeve's prose just flows off the page .

A wonderful new adventure from a master storyteller, Philip Reeve. The opening pages gripped, the wondrous landscape of Wildsea unfolded and Utterly was utterly delightful in her Watcher role.
I'm hoping this will be one of many Utterly Dark adventures.

It was very creative and extremely imaginative. I loved the language and that it's been left open for a sequel.

A story tgat recalls ancient myths and folklore around the destructive monster of the deep where noone dares to venture. Only one young girl, once found washed out on the shore, feels the call from the forbidding sea. Masterful descriptions of island landscapes and the power of the ocean are one with the unsettling plot. It reminded me of Tolkien in many ways. Highly recommended.
