A devastating novel – based on true events – of a hellish American reform school, from the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Underground Railroad.

Brilliant book, although quite a difficult read in places, about a reform school in America.
Based on the true story of a reform school in 1960's USA and the treatment of the boys sent there, this is an absolutely brilliant, if harrowing novel. The calm clarity of the writing never sensationalises while the detail makes for authenticity and a drawing in of the reader. There was a point in the novel, close to the end, when I felt as if I'd been punched in the gut. I literally gasped. It feels like a really important story that so needs to be out there and being read by as many people as possible.
