Australia, 1954, and Irene Bobs, wife of the best car salesman in the region, loves to drive fast. So much that she enters the infamous and brutal Redex Trial, a race around the parts of the country few would recognise. Much like the race itself, this fast-paced novel will take you on a journey of discovery to places that you would never have imagined!

A Long Way From Home is a brilliantly told story set in 1950's Australia, ostensibly about white Australians in a car road race but.... It starts off in typically quirky Carey style with an interesting plot and likeable, believable characters and we think we're off on another lovely Carey jaunt. The full story unfolds gradually until, eventually, the truth is laid bare. I don't want to say too much in case I spoil what is a very cleverly crafted tale but this powerful and complex novel left me seething with frustration at all the injustices that have been and are still being done in Australia. It is superbly written, well worth a read and I'll be recommending it to everyone.
