In truth, this was rather disappointing and not a patch on the other books in Indridason's Erlendur series. It's written as a prequel in the sense that it’s a story of Erlendur as a young detective. Set in 1979 it starts with the body of a man being discovered in hot spring lagoon. Erlendur is also investigating a death at a US military base and the cold case of a missing schoolgirl. There’s lots going on here, but I thought the characters were poorly drawn and the narrative never really came to life for me. I ended up wondering if something had been lost in the translation from Icelandic to English. Don't let this put you off reading the Erlendur series though, because most of the books in that are terrific.
