The sweeping and compelling new novel from the bestselling author of Girl with a Pearl Earring.
`Dark, brutal, moving, powerful’ Jane Harris `A wonderful book; rich, evocative, original. I loved it’ Joanne Harris TweetReviews
A beautifully written novel, as deeply textured as the bark of the trees it describes. Clearly well researched the novel takes us through the growing and caring for apple trees, redwoods and more via stories of the Goodenough family members who are by turns violent, caring, unsettled and calm. Other characters we meet are also vividly described, very individual, mainly likeable and add tremendous depth to the story. I loved everything about this book, with only a slight niggle about whether Robert would, in fact, have run when he did. Highly recommended.
