I really enjoyed this book, it was very detailed and thoughtful because the book was based on real men that couldn't become a star footballer because they died in WWI

I love the way courage and football still lived in their rat infested trenches at the worst of times but I also liked the way 'Jack' saved many lives

This was good and interesting to see how football can carry on during the trenches. It was a bit gory.

An accessible account of life in the trenches and the horrors of WW1 in an age appropriate style. Tom Palmer doesn’t shy away from the grim realities of life in the trenches but neither does he dwell on them It’s a gripping story of bravery and football , an ideal combination. for a reluctant reader.

It was good although not very exciting :(

This book was all about a group of footballers who went to fight in the war. A very heart-touching story of how close the group of soldiers became. The book kept me on the edge of my seat, I couldn’t put the book down! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fiction biographies or realistic fiction.

Despite the fact that football is not my thing, I really enjoyed this book.
It is based on the true story of a footballer before and after he enlists in WW1. It would make an amazing class reader for Y5/6 classes looking at WW1. I think i liked it because it was based on a real person and not just part of a story. Obviously some of it is fiction in order but there is enough fact for a historical story.
Jack doesn't have an easy time deciding to enlist or during the war but he does make it home, unlike some of his friends. Being home isn't easy either but he can play football.
Would recommend, as a class reader and, as I have found at school, for those who don't really like imaginative stories. In addition it is from Barrington Stoke so is dyslexia friendly.

In this book I learnt about the bayonets and the soldiers that went to war. I loved it because some of it was football which is one of my favourite sports. This book was based on a true story and some of is was based in Arsenal stadium and around England. And there were lots of facts about guns that they used in WW2.

Amazing.

you should read this book because it is very fun and it is all about football and all about world war 1.

I think lots of children should read this book ( Girls as`well ). This was a good book especially.

Interesting combination of football and war

To start off this book is great for people who love football, it also blends in with the top of the world war and how the characters manage to keep jolly in the darkest times of their life by playing football.

This book is also dyslexia friendly.

At least the copy I got from the library was.

My two favourite subjects in one book. Love this book. I would recommend it for ages 11+
