From One Reader to Another

The Reading Agency, English PEN and Free Word invite you to take part in From One Reader to Another, a reading and sharing project celebrating the best literature in translation from around the world.

From One Reader to Another celebrates the tenth anniversary of English PEN’s Writers in Translation programme, which has so far supported over 100 books from around the world to be made available in the English language.

These 100 books are showcased on a dedicated website, the World Bookshelf.

We are inviting 12 reading groups to read two great books in translation between August and November 2015, in tandem with another reading group elsewhere in the UK. Books from the World Bookshelf collection will be provided for each reading group, along with points for discussion about the books and information about the tandem group. It is likely that the two books given to each reading group will be from different countries and from different originating languages – so this is an opportunity to discover some fantastic contemporary writing your reading group might not usually come across.

Reading groups will receive 10 copies of each book.

November Sharing Day

Members of the selected reading groups are also invited to a day of sharing at the Free Word Centre in London in November, which will bring all participating groups together for enthusiastic discussion on translation and stories across cultures and will also include talks by well-known writers and translators about their experiences of engaging with international literature. At the end of the sharing day, readers will be invited to write a brief message in their books and leave them to be collected and distributed to the prison library network – thereby allowing ideas and stories to be shared again, from one reader to another.

We can cover transport and meals for up to six members of your reading group for the November sharing day.

If you are interested in taking part, please complete the survey below by Friday 12 June.
