Promoting wellbeing at Southend Library

Southend Libraries have been telling us about the mood-boosting events they've been running to promote the many health benefits of books and reading:
Promoting good mental health
Visitors had the opportunity to find out more about a range of recommended Mood-boosting Books, request or borrow some of this year's 25 World Book Night titles and enter a free prize draw to win a set of eight new Quick Reads.
There was also free information, reading lists and bookmarks. Southend Library gave away free 'stress dots' which change colour depending on your levels of stress. The aim was to raise awareness and to promote positive steps for good mental health.
Promoting wellbeing with Southend United
In April, Southend Library teamed up with Rethink Mental Illness again, and Southend United, to host a photo-call to highlight the mental health benefits of books and reading.
Players from Southend United met Rethink staff, volunteers and service users to find out more about Mood-boosting Books, libraries and reading. Players also received information, reading lists and bookmarks and had the chance to try out 'stress dots'.
Five copies of the award winning World Book Night title The Damned Utd. by David Peace were gifted to players from the football club as part of World Book Night 2012's celebrations.
We hope Southend Library has inspired you to have a go at hosting a Mood-boosting Books event at your library.
Drop-in events are simple but effective ways to use your Mood-boosting materials and raise awareness of mental health issues and the positive effects of reading.
If you have held an event, or are planning one in the future, why not get in touch? You can email us and tell us all about your event. We would love to hear from you.
