I read this on the recommendation of a friend, and was blown away by both the plot and storytelling. Published in 1992 it’s described as an ‘alternative history detective novel’ and set in a world in which the Nazi’s won World War II. The protagonist, Detective Xavier March, is investigating the murder of a high-ranking SS Officer. March is a diligent and clever policeman and it’s not long before he realises his case is connected to a number of killings of senior Nazi officials, and that he’s now caught in a political scandal relating to the Final Solution. The story was completely gripping and the ‘alternative history’ so well-described that it was easy to believe what might have happened if the Nazi’s had prevailed. Chilling in the extreme but I recommend it highly.
