Dismissed by Mr Poll, Gabriel descends into the violence and corruption of London’s underworld, a place where everything and everyone is for sale, and where – as Gabriel discovers – the taking of a life is easier than it might seem.

A resurrectionist is a grave robber and so gory bits are inevitable. This is not a book for the squeamish. The protagonist is an orphan sent to be an apprentice surgeon but meets and becomes entangled with some very unsavoury characters. The book follows him as he gets buffeted along through life with terrible event following terrible event and him never seeming to know how he got to where he is. He seems to be the victim of his own life even when he is committing the most horrific acts himself which I found quite disturbing. I felt the book to be well written and gripping enough to wade my way, chilled though I was, through the gore and get to the more philosophical ending. I would recommend it because overall it's a thought provoking story but hesitatingly and selectively because of the gore. Did I mention the gore?
