I'd never even heard of this author before choosing to read this novel. But it turns out it’s one of the biggest-selling Japanese thrillers ever, the inspiration for a cult film, and has won numerous Japanese and international awards. Yasuko is a single mother, quietly bringing up her daughter in Tokyo when one day her violent ex-husband turns up without warning. When the man’s body is found sometime later Yasuko is the natural suspect, but the detective investigating the case has problems finding holes in her alibi. This is a really excellent cat-and-mouse story: suspicions without evidence and a battle of wits. There’s also a terrific twist at the end. Read this if you can!

This book was very clever. There are lots of twists and unexpected moments that would surprise the reader. I was hooked, due to these unexpected revelations. I definitely would recommend this book, it is brilliant.

This book is the guide to coevering up someone elses murder for love. This was my first murder mystery and will probably remain as one of my favourites. The ways in which I lay out my working out in algebraic equations for my alevel maths is closeley in comparison to the lengths in which Ishigami goes to cover up for the Hanaoka family.
