This book is a dual timeline story set in Italy in modern day and in 1943-44 and we felt there was a good contrast between the modern day and the Italy during the German occupation of WW2.
We felt there was good contrast between the two timelines and found the wartime story line very educational as little was known about the German occupation of Italy and the many factions which made up the Resistance.
While we all enjoyed it we would all have liked more of the wartime story as we found that more interesting because it whetted our appetite to know more. However we felt the book would have benefitted from some notes at the end to explain more about the interactions of different political factions in Italy at the time.
We thought it well written and meaty in parts with a good view of the modern day Italian bureaucracy.
One of us felt the book was out of balance, she felt it would have been better to concentrate on the story of just one timeline ie the wartime story that could even be expanded into its own book.
We gave the book three and a half stars.
