All but one of our members present liked this book. Two liked it a lot whilst others thought it was entertaining and quite funny. One member agreed but would have liked more plot. One member did not like it at all and felt it was far-fetched and implausible.

It was quick to read - a light read - yet we felt it was well-written without unnecessary flourishes: "Simple but effective", "Well-written and honed". It had a quirky feel and an ironic touch and was often very funny.

It led to an interesting discussion about life in the fifties and how true to life this account was. One member felt it was probably taken from diaries written at the time.

We found it showed the power of a book group because most of us would not have picked it off the shelf and yet we enjoyed reading it.
