Thanks to Nicole Sweeney at Canongate Books for copies of The Fortunate Brother by Donna Morrissey for the DI Book Club.
When I first started reading the book I found the language of the characters quite difficult.
I could understand the language but how to pronounce what they were saying was a bit difficult. I suppose if I was Canadian then it would have been easier. That aside I really did enjoy the book.
I was totally drawn in to the story of Kyle and his family in the small outpost of Hampden on the Newfoundland coast.
Donna Morrissey really captures the claustrophobic atmosphere of a small coastal town, where everyone is either related or knows one another. As the story unfolds there is a realisation that
this is not the case. People have secrets and pasts that they are reluctant to share.
Atmospheric and tense, this book is a page turner.
I wasn’t aware until I had finished the book that The Fortunate Brother is part of a trilogy
and I already have a copy of Sylvanus Now that I am looking forward to reading.
