It was meant to be a harmless stag-night prank. A few hours later Michael Harrison has disappeared and his friends are dead.

With only three days to the wedding, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace – a man haunted by the shadow of his own missing wife – is contacted by Michael’s beautiful, distraught fiancée, Ashley Harper.

Grace discovers that the one man who ought to know Michael Harrison’s whereabouts is saying nothing. But then he has a lot more to gain than anyone realizes, For one man’s disaster is another man’s fortune . . .

Dead Simple is the stunning first novel in the number one bestselling Roy Grace series from award-winning author, Peter James.

I was delighted to find this because it’s Book 1 in the Roy Grace series, which now numbers 18 books. Published in 2005 it’s the scene-setter that starts to build Grace’s character and explains his back story. The case being investigated in this appears to be a stag night prank that’s gone horribly wrong, but there’s a whole lot more to that story than meets the eye. One of the reasons I enjoyed it so much was that it felt very real. There’s nothing super-clever about Grace and the case twists and turns very nicely to keep you absorbed, although there’s maybe one twist too many at the end.

This is a thriller of a detective story. It is full of surprises. Like Edgar Allen Poe it speaks to some of our deepest fears and creates suspense in a very clever plot.
