The Catcher in the Rye

This is a modern classic. This book has been banned in certain locations. In my opinion this book is nonsense. I would love someone to come and tell me I am wrong and why this is a classic. The story is about the thoughts, worries, fantasies of teenage Holden Caulfield. He is bright, hates school and is very annoying. Maybe I am too old to understand? You tell me.

I really liked the storyline and how it was written as thoughts. I also liked how the title only made sense further towards the end. The very last bit of the book wasn't clearly explained though. The main character and narrator ends up in hospital but it's not really explained why, there arw hints throughout but theres not a dead set reason.

I read this book in 1991and thought I'd try it again. It still made me laugh out loud!! I'm always alarmed by how much I relate to the main character, only to discover he is in a psychiatric hospital!!!!

I would recommend this book as I found it to have an interesting plot. I did not particlularly like Holden but you can clearly see his gradual descent into madness throughout the story, even though it only takes place in one weekend. It was interesting to have a character who does not necessarily understand his own feelings, often finding himself feeling despressed or crying in response to what someone had said, without actually understanding why it had triggered this response. I liked that the book was written in his voice as this made it feel more like it was Holden who was actually telling the story and made it easier to imagine him as a real person, rather than having the voice of an anonymous narrator.

It is an old book but it's still a good read!

interesting but not as good as everyone claims
